OnCampus 319 was a college lifestyle magazine founded in Iowa City, IA, in the summer 2006 by four of my peers/friends: W. Kane Johnson, Adam Kuperman, Ted McCartan, & Mitch Benskin. I came aboard soon after to guide the magazine from a creative/design standpoint and get the first issue out the door during the first day of classes for the University of Iowa.

None of us had done anything like this before, or at this scale, (if I recall correctly our first run was something like 12,000 issues) and had no idea what we were getting into. Ted (editor-in-chief) and I were still finishing up our journalism degrees, doing a 5th year victory lap, so we were juggling classes and trying to get everything finished for the magazine at the end of each month was interesting. There were many late nights at my house, huddled around my computer screen chugging Red Bull and trying to figure out how we were going to get 40 pages laid out before 10AM the next morning.

It was a good run and we published for a full academic year. I graduated in May of ’07 and moved out to New York in September and the magazine wound down shortly afterward. I like to think we did pretty well for 5 kids who had no idea what it took to publish a magazine.
